Printable Build a Pencil Craft

Pencils are one of the most recognizable back to school supplies, which makes this a fun craft idea for the beginning of the school year!

Kids can build their own pencil complete with a space to write their name. Just color the pieces, cut them out, and glue everything onto a sheet of paper or construction paper.

This activity is especially fun at the start of the school year when kids are learning to recognize and write their names.

How to Build Your Own Pencil

Supplies Needed

  • Pencil craft template
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • White copy paper or construction paper (optional)

Step 1: Color the pieces

Write your name in the center of the pencil. Then, color all the pieces with crayons, markers, or colored pencils.

You can use classic pencil colors or create your own colorful design.

Step 2: Cut out the pieces

Cut out each piece using the dashed lines as a guide.

It’s okay if a little white space remains around the edges.

Step 3: Add the eraser

If you’re using a background, glue the eraser piece onto the paper first. Then, glue the pencil body on top.

If you’re making a standalone pencil, glue the eraser piece behind the top of the pencil body.

Step 4: Add the pencil tip

Glue the pencil tip onto the bottom of the pencil body, lining up the wavy edges to finish your craft.
