Our solar system is home to 8 planets, all orbiting the sun!
With this cut-and-paste activity, kids can color each planet, cut them out, and arrange them onto the orbit scene in order from Mercury all the way out to Neptune.
This is a great one to have ready for space themes or science units in preschool or kindergarten.

How to Build Your Own Solar System

Supplies Needed
- Solar system craft template
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- White copy paper or construction paper (optional)
Step 1: Color the pieces
Color the Sun, planets, and stars with crayons, markers, or colored pencils.
You can use colors similar to the real planets or create your own colorful solar system.
Step 2: Cut out the pieces
Next, cut out the solar system background and all eight planets.
Step 3: Start with the solar system background
Glue the solar system background onto a larger piece of paper if you want your craft to have a background.
The curved lines show the paths the planets follow as they orbit the Sun.

Step 4: Add the first four planets
Starting closest to the Sun, glue Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars onto the first four orbit lines.
These are called the inner planets.

Step 5: Add the outer planets
Next, glue Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune onto the remaining orbit lines.
These are called the outer planets.
Here’s how it should look with a background vs. without.

Now your solar system is finished!
